Casino

The term "casino" originated from Italy, where it referred to something situated on the grounds of a larger Italian villa or palazzo. It literally translates as a small villa, summerhouse or pavilion built solely for the reasons of enjoyment. It all started changing about 19th century, when the term was beginning to get used in respect to other venues, which had the main idea of enjoyment and pleasurable activities that guests could engage in, such as gambling, different alternative sports and a lot of alcohol consumption.

Today, casinos hold facilities for gambling usually combined with other luxury activities, such as restaurants, hotels, retail shopping, cruise ships and other vacation money making businesses. There are also special events that some casinos prefer to host for their guests, such as live entertainment events, concerts and sporting events.

In most of the casinos gambling age is between 18 and 21 years old. Most popular games include roulette, blackjack, baccarat, poker and fruit machines. Most games have mathematically-determined odds, which in terms means that the house (the casino operator) retains the house-edge over players. The house-edge is a long-term advantage that the casino has over the player due to the specifics of the game. In games, such as poker as well as other games, where the players play against each other, the house has to take a commission, which is called the rake. The percentage that the players win is called the payout. If the player's rake is big enough, they play with the winnings. This is usually referred to as playing with house money.

Due to the threat of having too many pathological gamblers in the communities where casinos are usually situated, there has to be a certain percentage of jobs available within the venues to ensure the positive net economic effect. The ratio as suggested by Professor Earl Grinols of Baylor University has to come down to 13% employment per 100,000 people in the community.

Security is another issue that is troubling both: land-based and online casinos, which is why they focus on this issue a great deal. This is not a surprise, considering the huge amounts of money that move through the casino on a daily basis. In the land-based casinos, the CCTV cameras are located everywhere and watched by very professional staff members that have both on watch, guests and staff members too. There is also a physical division that is there to react to calls and parole the floor, which literally means they are on a front line of the events as they happen. Both departments work very close with each other and "the front line men" are usually directed by those who are in the CCTV department. The first casino that used security cameras was The Mirage in 1989.

With the introduction on Internet and its nearly instant penetration in most areas of life, online casinos seemed like a natural development that would help operators avoid all the obvious security problems and huge investments that are essential to launch a land-based venue.
