Government Tightens Up On Internet Gambling Advertising

13th Aug 2007

The UK Government has tightened up the restrictions on Internet Gambling advertising, in a bid to improve protection to online casino users from exploitation and crime.

The 2005 Gambling Act measures that legalized online gambling and deregulated Casinos, updates gambling laws. The Act relaxes advertising laws for UK Casino operators and Bookmakers, but websites based outside the EC or Gibraltar will have to prove their licensing regimes ensure gambling is fair, deter crime and protect children.

James Purcell, the Culture Secretary, said:

"I make no apology for banning adverts for websites operating from places that don't meet our strict standards."

Companies based outside of Europe and Gibraltar will have to apply to the British Government if they want to advertise in the UK when the activity is legalised on the 1st September. A "white List" of allowed advertisers will be created for those companies that meet the requirements and also contribute a small amount to fund gambling education.

The process of getting on the "White List" provides an excellent opportunity for governments and regulators to work together to improve the regulatory environment associated with online gambling all the time.
