Yahoo! liberalises gambling ad policy
16th May, 2008
Online web portal Yahoo! has liberalised its policy over casino advertisements following changes to the UK's gambling laws.
Previously, British law had prohibited all websites to run advertisements that contain invitations for gambling or allude to cash prizes or casino bonuses that can be won.
Proponents of the old legislation claimed that by promoting such offers websites would be complicit in encouraging problem gamblers to over-indulge in their hobby.
However, under the newly-introduced legislation UK gambling ads can now mention all of these features, with the sole proviso being that they must block web users from Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland from viewing them.
Irish and Northern Irish law have retained the hard-line approach to such advertising, citing concerns over social responsibility and the issue of underage casino gambling.
Leading internet brand Google currently prohibits all forms of gambling advertisements, even for play-for-fun websites.
