Work starts on Arizona casino

Builders have started working on a new hotel in Arizona which will include a 240,000 sq ft casino.

The new 15-storey development, which is due to be complete in 2010, is expected to entice some of North America's top poker players to the region.

"We're looking for a four-star-plus type of operation," said Russ Burbank, senior vice president of operations for Casino Arizona.

"It will certainly be positioned in the market with the peer groups out there."

The casino which is being built as part of the project will be twice the size of the nearest rival which is located six miles away.

Developers of the resort say they want to make the gambling experience similar to that of Las Vegas – where everything is accessible under one roof.

Mr Burbank said: "The concept of having everything in one structure - similar to Nevada's - is a feature that makes Casino Arizona's new resort and spa unique in the Valley."

He added that this will mean guests to the hotel will be able to move around different venues without stepping outside "as they do at some other of our competitors' current casinos".

Earlier this month, the Arizona Gaming Department and the Arizona Indian Gaming Association announced that it would be joining forces with the US Attorney's Office to crack down on crime in casinos.
