Vegas population hits 2 million

7th December, 2007

Las Vegas and the surrounding area has seen its population double since 1994 and is now called home by two million people, a new report says.

As well as the 39 million tourists who annually jet in to the Nevada desert to try their luck on the felt tables, the city is also bustling with a growing number of permanent residents.

Figures show that since 1981 the population of Clark County – which houses the gambling capital of the world – has seen its population increase four-fold.

The growing number of people who want to set up home near the hub reflects the increase in popularity of casino games and poker.

Keith Schwer, Las Vegas economist at the University of Nevada, said that in terms of population, Nevada had been the fastest growing state in the US for 19 out of the last 20 years.

Clark County commissioner Bruce Woodbury added: "One part of me wishes we could put up a fence and not let that two millionth person in.

"But people are coming and we have to be ready for them."
