Gambling amongst US women is on the rise
Unfortunately there is a growing national trend within the US, where fears are rising as the number of women with gambling problems rise.
The Cincinnati Enquirer reported Sunday that women are increasingly becoming addicted to gambling. “Sadly there has been a big societal shift, women didn’t used to do this. Women are catching up to men,” said Keith Whyte the executive director of the National Council on Problem Gambling.
Former executive director for the Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey Arnie Wexler said, “Ten years ago, 20 to 25 percent of calls to the New Jersey council involved female gamblers, but today the national problem gambling hotline gets around half its calls from women or regarding women.”
There was an incident with a Michelle Paluga 43, of Colerain Township, Ohio, earlier this year. She stole $150,000 from her employer and a further $28,000 from the parent-teacher association chapter of which she was the president, all in order to fund her gambling addiction. She received a 18th month custodial sentence in August.
