Superjumbo to become supercasino?
18th February, 2008
Airbus is reportedly in negotiations with unnamed Asian buyers over the possibility of turning some of its A380 superjumbos into casinos.
The double-decker A380 recently replaced the Boeing 747 as the world's largest commercial jet and is capable of carrying up to 853 people in full economy-class configuration.
But far from kitting it out to cram in as many passengers as possible, the latest media reports suggest Asian casino gambling interests are exploring the possibility of creating the world's most luxurious flying casino.
Curbs on gambling across the continent have forced many well-off Asians to visit the Chinese exclave of Macau in order to satisfy their slot machine hankerings, but pundits say chartered gambling flights over international waters could provide an alternative to such restrictions.
Francois Chazelle, heads of Airbus executive and private aviation division, said that gambling "is clearly a growing business in Asia and what this interest reflects is what is happening in Macao and Singapore. The idea of a flying casino has been mentioned before but it's now looking a lot more concrete".
Las Vegas Sands confirmed last week that it is exploring the possibility of running casino flights out of Hong Kong.
