Sixteen UK Casinos given the go-ahead
8th February, 2008
Six months after a U-turn from Gordon Brown, 16 casinos have been given the go-ahead in the UK. At first he didn’t want to bring Las-Vegas style gambling to Britain.
There will now be 16 smaller casinos built, with the supercasino idea being shelved to the anger of the council in Manchester, who were to use the development to redevelop the east of the city.
All 16 confirmed they were still keen, and as a result, casinos with a maximum area of 53,820 sq ft (5,000 sq m) and up to 150 £4,000 slot machines will now be granted licences in Leeds, Southampton, Great Yarmouth, Middlesbrough, Solihull, Hull, Milton Keynes and Newham, London.
Casinos up to 10,764 sq feet (1,000 sq m) get the go-ahead in Bath and North East Somerset, Dumfries and Galloway, Scarborough, Wolverhampton, Swansea, Luton, Torbay and East Lindsey, Lincs.
