Scotland opens largest casino

Harrah's Entertainment, one of the firms responsible for turning the Las Vegas strip into the world's premier casino gambling mecca, has opened a new site in Glasgow.

The £25 million Alea Glasgow casino is now Scotland's largest gambling establishment and will cater primarily to working-class individuals.

A spokesman for Harrah insisted that no expenses was spared in the development of the site, but he was keen to reassure local gamblers that the Alea would not be an "exclusive" venue and that informal gamers looking for an afternoon pint would be welcome.

"As far as we're concerned, the days of casinos being the domain of men in tuxedos are over," said sales and marketing manager Nicola Mackenzie. "There's no formal dress code - as long as you're smart and tidy you will be more than welcome."

The Alea will feature a main slot machine gaming floor as well as three bars, a restaurant and a live music room. It will also boast an unbeatable view overlooking the Clylde River, affording gamblers a serene setting in which to spin their luck.

Harrah Entertainment had hoped to make the Alea the first British supercasino, but that bid was quashed when prime minister Gordon Brown revoked plans to liberalise gambling restrictions.
