Rumours About the Delay Casino Plans are Addressed
26th September, 2007
Monday it turned out that mayor Delay is considering Navy Pier, Northerly Island and the surrounding area of McCormick Palace as potential areas to build a brand new Chicago Casino.
Recently a lot of debate has been going on about the mayor thinking about getting rid of Chicago Children’s Museum on the Navy Pier in favour of a new casino. These debates were born after Daley has been fighting to build children’s museum in Grant Park. The concerns were further strengthened when downtown Brendan Reilly purposed Northerly Island as an alternative site.
Nevertheless, the mayor decided to defend himself and put all the speculations to rest on Monday at a news conference at Navy Pier, where he is facilitating a “Hemispheric Forum” for his colleagues from North, South and Central America: "When we decided to do Navy Pier, people had rumors: 'Oh, there's going to be a big gaming hall.' I don't know who's getting these rumors out. This will never be a gaming facility. ... Navy Pier is for families. When I closed ... Meigs Field, they said it was going to be gaming. It's not going to be gaming. And also, gaming is not going to be around McCormick Place because you have conventions. They want to do convention business. If we have an opportunity to do a casino, you place it ... away from these venues."
