Public Awareness Campaign to Stop Deval Patrick's plans
30th October, 2007
A new Public Awareness Campaign is being launched to stop casino gambling entering Massachusetts. There is an opposition, Casino Free Mass, that is being formed to prevent Deval Patrick from bringing casino gambling into Massachusetts.
Casino Free Mass consists of several religious organizations as well as mental health professionals and small business owners, which are all trying to keep Massachusetts free of gambling, casinos and everything to do with the “destructive activity that is called gambling”.
They have already started actively targeting public to raise awareness and create a mass protest against Deval Patrick’s plans, by launching a web-site and generating forums around the state discussing the issues and encouraging others to voice opinions.
The first meeting is scheduled for November, 7th in New Bedford.
The group is obviously trying to care for the community to help people prevent the possibility of having a mass gambling problem. On the other hand, the group is blatantly disregarding the economic benefits the casino resorts would bring to the state. Patrick is confident enough to say that three resort casinos would bring hundreds of millions of dollars in new revenue for the state.
This is what the Reverend Jack Johnson of the Massachusetts Council of Churches had to say on the matter: "morally reprehensible to raise revenue from those who can least afford it.”
