Plot thickens over Vegas ricin find
3rd March, 2008
Detectives in Las Vegas are still waiting to interview a critically-ill man in connection with the find of several vials of ricin in a motel room last Friday.
The discovery of the deadly poison attracted significant media attention because it has previously been linked to a foiled terrorist plot in the UK. Ricin is derived from castor beans and can be lethal in minute quantities.
Officials were quick to dispel any connection to global terrorism, however, insisting that there appears to be no evidence of a wider plot and that the deadly substance has not been spread.
Nonetheless the discovery of the poison, compounded by the presence of an Anarchist's cookbook and a firearm, was enough to cause alarm among residents and visitors to the casino gambling mecca.
Roger Von Bergendorff, the man who had been renting the motel room and the sole suspect in the case, reportedly remains unconscious in hospital, though his cousin told the Associated Press he is "holding his own".
The investigation continues.
