Online casinos step up to help Africa
10th July, 2008
It’s not often that online casinos get a good rap in the media, but this time it’s undeniable that something good is going on in the online casino industry.
Online slots and casino operator Slotland.com have been helping Third World countries for a number of years, but their recent campaign to aid Africa raised $100,000.
“We’ve learned that self-initiated projects are most likely to succeed,” said David Leflar, Project Team Leader. “Where there’s a will, we will help them find a way.”
The money was used to help the village of Juma in Malawi, building a new centre for the community along with a school for the kids.
“The school that we’ve funded will have a long lasting benefit to the entire community,” said Martin Smith, Slotland.com spokesman. “It provides opportunities and will help end the cycle of poverty in Malawi. We’re very proud that one of our biggest affiliates, CasinoRanking.com, was impressed enough with the positive results of our project that they’re making a very substantial donation of their own.”
CasinoRanking.com has decided to donate commission for a year, which will be at least $10,000 for the cause. The casino operator will not have too much control over how the money will be spent, but after seeing the recent results of the aid effort they are confident it will be used in the best way.
“The online casino business is a high profit industry,” said Antoine Tardif, CasinoRanking.com spokesman. “We should consider ourselves lucky to have the opportunity to help others who are not as fortunate. I understand that the school is now completed, but Malawi is still one of the poorest nations on earth. If the money can go towards building wells or finding clean water that would be great too. Obviously we can trust this dedicated Project Team to decide how to best spend the money.”
