NBA player gives gold medal to Las Vegas casino

27th August, 2008

Making good on a promise he made before the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, Jason Kidd is handing over the gold medal he just won, as the US basketball team cruised to victory after defeating Spain in the final.

Most people would hold on to their gold medal for dear life, but Kidd is not the usual gold-medal winner. He’s been there before and already walked away with gold and I mean who really needs more than one gold medal?

In reality Kidd is just living up to a promise he made to Elaine Wynn that if he won the gold he would give his gold medal to her, and apparently he wasn’t joking around.

“Last summer, we stayed at the Wynn for a lifetime, close to three weeks,” Kidd said. “We met at a banquet, we got to talking, and she really understands the game.”

He said that he decided to give her the gold medal because of the way Elaine and everyone at the Wynn Casino treated them during their extended stay at the luxury casino and resort.

“I told her I’d make a deal with her, that if we won the gold medal, I’d give it to her,” Kidd said. “She thought I was kidding. But I told her I had one already, and the way they treated us at the Wynn, it was the least I could do.”

Most people who read the headline of an NBA superstar giving his gold medal to a Las Vegas casino immediately think it is to pay for an outstanding gambling debt. This, however, was out of the kindness of his heart – as a gift to a place that brought him some good times.
