Growing support for US gambling bill

Support for a bill that would overrule America's controversial anti-online casino gambling laws appears to be growing among US representatives.

US Congressmen Barney Frank and Ron Paul penned HR 5767 in April in an attempt to force the Treasury Department and Federal Reserve to abandon the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement (UIGEA) law.

That bill makes it illegal for gamers to deposit funds in online casino and online poker websites, effectively outlawing all forms of real-money internet-based gambling.

But in a sign that support for a casino revolt is growing, it has emerged that ten bipartisan representatives have now signed up to Mr Frank and Mr Paul's proposition.

One of the supporters, Florida Democrat Robert Wexler, had previously launched the Skill Game Protection Act in June 2007, a bill which specifically attempted to legalise online poker.

The UIGEA was brought into effect in October 2006.
