Greektown Casino will lay off 2% of workers
1st August, 2008
A spokesman for the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians has just announced the Greektown Casino will be laying off 2% of its workforce because the casino is now in the grips of a mounting deficit up to $15 million, currently.
As the numbers seem to be falling across the board in casinos around the country, it appears that downsizing is the trend sweeping the industry.
“Casino revenues are down across the state, tourism is not the same, gas prices are high, a lot of things play into this,” said Cory Wilson, spokesman for the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians. “Greektown Casino is a big part of our financial picture of the tribe and it played a key role in where we stand right now. All of our operations are doing anything we can to avoid more layoffs. This is a last resort.”
It is currently undeterminable what affect the new layoffs will have on future casino revenues, according to the spokesman, Wright. The casino is doing only what it feels is necessary to stay afloat in the industry’s current climate.
“I was told that they were downsizing,” said Nathan Wright, Web site administrator who was laid off Thursday. “And that we would be eligible for unemployment. Normally, there’s an appeal process but it’s not available right now. There’s a lot of places that are downsizing right now but usually they get the top-heavy people; not the small guys like myself.”
