GigaMedia shrugs off proposed Canada ban

28th March, 2008

In a statement released by GigaMedia today the company has disregarded reports that the Canadian government will be clamping down on Internet casino gambling.

According to Canadian law, only the provincial government is authorised to issue gaming licenses. A ban would affect over 400 online casino sites, which the government deems to be illegal and that are currently operating out of the Kahnawake Native Reserve in eastern Quebec.

Part of the statement released by GigaMedia said: "On the basis of communications with Canadian counsel and government officials, the company believes no change in the current licensing system is contemplated."

The Canadian government had indicated, however, that it was likely to clamp down on online casino gambling in the Kahnawake region.

Despite the fact that the practice is already severely restricted in the Canada, the Kahnawake Mohawk people believe their land is sovereign and that laws passed in Ottawa do not apply to them.
