Daily Mail Forced to hand £4 million over to Casino Tycoon
20th March, 2008
The Daily Mail is now forced to pay £4 million to the American casino tycoon, Sheldon Adelson, in libel damages for badmouthing his business practicing and publishing other information that they did not have any factual grounds to believe as truth, but could have been very damages to the reputation of the man.
The newspaper accused the chairman and chief executive of Las Vegas Sands Corp of “cut-throat, ruthless and despicable” business practices, which turned out to have no facts to support the statement, which in itself is a reputation attack.
There was also a story in the paper in May 2005, which said that the tycoon was in secret discussion with Malcolm Glazer. The paper claimed that they were considering taking over Manchester United before the club was bought by the latter in three years ago.
This was proven to be a complete false and made-up accusation, as Adelson, who was described the 12th richest man worldwide by the Forbes magazine, says he has never met Malcolm Glazer in his life.
Adelson’s solicitor, Gedeon Benaim, had this to say: "These allegations were all unjustified." He made this statement to Mr Justice Eady of London’s high court.
"As such, they represent a grave slur on Mr Adelson's personal integrity and business reputation…the reporting on this issue by the Daily Mail was completely and totally in error," the solicitor added.
Associated Newspapers, publishers of the Daily Mail, apologized to the man after confessing that indeed the more horrid and serious claims made against his persona were false and unsupported.
The tycoon decided to give £4 million share of the money to the Royal Marsden cancer hospital in London.
