Cherokee Residents Against Casino Gambling

5th December, 2007

Cherokee County Residents have casted their votes and the results are now in. 719-419 voted against the ballot measure allowing casino gambling to enter the county.

According to The Cherokee County Auditor's Office, only 13% of 8,806 registered voters made the effort to count themselves in and vote.

Nevertheless this September gone, 700 registered voters presented a petition to the Cherokee County Board of supervisors in favor of enabling gambling and building casinos in the county.

James Peck, a member of Cherokee’s City who submitted the petition was very disappointed with the results of the voting, as it creates serious long-term consequences.

"If we lose this vote, it will be another eight years before we can hold another election and by then other communities could be established as prime candidates for the licensing."

With the Iowa Gaming Commission, the licensed casinos have to launch a non-profit organisation that would have a board of trustees to oversee the distribution of funds to county recipients.
