Casino strike in Ontario to be resolved
30th July, 2008
Casino employees of the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp, which has casinos in Sudbury, Bradford and Toronto, will be voting on a new agreement that could resolve the strike of more than 800 employees.
The employees went on strike the 1st June and have kept facilities closed since then, but if the agreement is made the Brantford and Sudbury facilities will be reopened as early as this weekend.
“This agreement is both fair to our valued employees in Brantford, Sudbury and at Woodbine, and it provides OLG with the flexibility to operate our facilities and serve our customers,” said Kelly McDougald, CEO of Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation. “This has been a tough nine weeks for all parties and we are pleased that we were able to reach an agreement. I look forward to welcoming our employees back to work.”
The complete details of the new deal that is being voted on has not been released to the public as to not compromise the process of reaching an agreement between the employees on strike and the casino operator.
“While it has been a difficult time for everyone, I’m pleased the agreement will give us the opportunity to turn the page and build on our relationship,” said Hemi Mitic, Assistant to the CAW National President.
The employees have shown great strength by holding their ground through it all, and that’s why many are hoping this agreement gets reached. However, employees made it clear their not going to settle without getting what they want.
“People have found a way to make ends meet and they’ve been enjoying their time off,” said Lynn, a casino employee . It has given everyone a chance to spend time with their family and friends. But we’ve been out on the picket line for two months, so we’re not going to settle for just anything. We want a good contract. “
