Casino school opens in Cardiff
6th December, 2007
The UK's first casino school was unveiled in Cardiff, Wales, this week, which will be used to train students who want to pursue a career in the gambling industry.
Opened by Professional Croupier Training, the centre hopes to take on up to 100 new recruits a year who will be given lessons in working in a casino, poker club or gambling venue.
Janet Miller, who will be training up the new students, said: "The new National Occupational Standards are part of a move to professionalise the sector and encourage more talented people, including graduates, to pursue careers in casinos.
"People aged over 18 can train as croupiers. If they have outgoing personalities, are good with figures and have dexterity in both hands, they may well have the ingredients to succeed in this business."
Those who attend the school will be offered a six-week full-time course or part-time intensive lessons over a period of six months and will cover subjects including gaming law, gambling awareness and social responsibility.
Students who pass the end of course exams will be handed a Professional Croupier Gaming Skills qualification which will allow them to work in casinos and other gambling venues.
A recent survey from research firm Mintel found that more adults play poker in Wales than any other part of the UK.
