Casino revenue funds responsible gambling centre

30th March, 2008

America's National Center for Responsible Gaming (ANCRG) is to funnel $7.6 million (£3.8 million) into a responsible casino gambling facility and research centre, it has emerged.

The money has been gleaned from the casino industry's own takings, according to Phil Satre, chairman of the not-for-profit group.

He confirmed that the world's two largest casino companies - Harrah's Entertainment and MGM Mirage Inc - were responsible for the largest proportion of the sponsorship, each fronting $2 million (£1 million).

Those donations mark a fivefold rise on the amounts both companies contributed last year and according to analysts are an indication of how seriously they take the issue of problem gambling.

Mr Satre was formerly head of Harrah's Entertainment and has said that in his new role as ANCRG chairman he will be pushing for more scientific work to investigate causes of problem gambling.

All grants to the research centre are handled by the Institute for Research on Pathological Gambling and Disorders, a program of the Division on Addictions at Cambridge Health Alliance.
