Casino ad creates controversy

24th July, 2008

A television advertisement released by Caesars Windsor casino has sparked a recent controversy because many patrons find it to be offensive and do not appreciate its use of women and sex to attract people to a casino.

The advertisement shows a woman looking across a casino table at a man and bats her eyes while saying something to a friend. After that the commercial cuts to the woman on a white bed wearing only a blick bra and panties.

“It’s horrible!” said Rosemary Scarpelli, a 50-year-old mother of two. “It puts women down and they don’t need to use women to sell stuff. It’s just disgusting to me, it’s 2008.”

The commercial is sold as “the life you were meant to live,” but many believe the woman in the commercial represents a prostitute. Even people who are not bothered by the commercial say the message is all wrong because it fails to relate to the target customer of a casino.

“The demographics don’t make sense,” said Jacob Miklojcik, a gaming expert of Michigan Consultants. “It’s mostly people 50, 60 and over going to casinos...These are not the people shown in the commercial. Most casinos look like 1973 bowling alleys and while there may be a few fancy dressers, 80 percent are in slacks or shorts.”

Miklojcik went on to express that he believed casinos are not supposed to be held to such high standards, and that people should probably take the advertisement with a grain of salt.

“The skin thing is irrelevant to me,” Miklojcik said. “These people are going to a casino, not a church.”
