Casino Cheat: Guilty
10th December, 2007
Wei Shan Liu, a 44 year-old Chinese woman, was found guilty of fraud in just four hours, after helping an attempt to swindle over $750,000 from Jupiters Casino.
Jury members were told how Liu and her co-accused decided a scam in which one member of the group used an extra card, hidden under his hand, to manipulate many games of mini baccarat in the high rollers room at Jupiters Casino on May 17th 2005.
He was using the extra card, stolen from the same table the day before, to deliberately lose whilst Liu and the rest of the accomplices bet large amounts, up to $40,000 against his hand. In less than an hour, they had fleeced the casino for in excess of $750,000. Liu claimed $400,000 of the winnings, ‘winning’ 21 out of the 27 hands played with the extra card.
During the trial, expert witnesses had to be used to point out the cheating to the jury, as there was no video evidence of the extra card. Liu’s solicitor has argued for a shorter sentence because the mother of two’s children have been suffering as a result, developing behavioural problems.
