Canada gets serious over online gambling
6th March, 2008
The Canadian government has indicated that it is preparing to clamp down on online casinos based in a native reserve in the eastern province of Quebec.
Aboriginal Canadians, also known as First Nations, have traditionally not been as involved in casino gambling enterprises as their American counterparts - for whom the industry is now a dominant source of income.
But according to a recent report in the National Post the country's First Nations are now operating approximately 400 poker and sports-betting sites out of the Kahnawake reserve near Montreal.
Despite online gambling being severely restricted by Canadian law, provincial governments have reportedly been turning a blind eye to the practice having deemed it to be relatively harmless.
But the country's federal government now says it plans to enter the fray and will shortly begin dismantling any internet-based casino services such as progressive jackpots and online slot machines.
The Mohawks of Kahnawake have in the past dismissed legislation banning online gambling, insisting that their reserves constitute sovereign land and so laws passed in Ottawa do not apply to them.
