Bodog applies for UK license
11th February, 2008
Leading online casino website Bodog has applied for a UK operating license, the Guardian is reporting.
The move suggests that the casino gambling operator is making strides to move deeper into the European market - setting it aside from much of its competition, the majority of whom bypass the UK given its high 15 per cent remote gaming tax.
Bodog also hit the headlines last week after confirming plans to penetrate the Asian online casino gambling market with the launch of new Chinese-focusing websites in both Cantonese and Mandarin.
Bodog chief executive Calvin Ayre confirmed on his personal blog that the company was committed to gaining a foothold in the UK.
"Not only does it make sense from a business perspective, but it feels right on a personal level as well," he explained. "My roots are in the United Kingdom; my grandparents hailed from Scotland and England and I feel a lot of connection to the UK."
Bodog is also one of the few mainstream internet-based casinos that accepts bets from US customers despite that country's ban on online gambling.
