'Workers dying' due to Las Vegas expansion
4th April, 2008
The expansion of the Las Vegas strip is accelerating at such a fast pace that developers are overlooking the need to protect construction staff, it has been claimed.
Casinogamblingweb.com is reporting that there have been nine deaths on casino or resort-related sites in Sin City during recent construction work.
It claimed that with $30 billion (£15 billion) worth of projects on the table developers are under increasing pressure to get jobs done on time - in some cases leading to lax safety measures and tragically loss of life.
The website panned the wider tourism industry and the companies backing fast-paced development in the city, arguing that it would be unfair to lay the blame squarely on construction executives.
A recent investigation by America's Occupational Safety and Health Administration found that a number of worker training violations appear to have been sanctioned in order to speed up work - a practice which one analyst said was unlikely to change
"It's not going to happen, not in this city," the anonymous safety engineer told casinogamblingweb.com. "It's push, push, push."
